  • Homemade synthetic fill sleeping quilt & nylon stuff sack
  • 1/8 inch thick closed cell foam sleeping pad
  • 3x7 foot sheet of tyvek material (used as ground sheet)
  • 7x12 two person tarp, & stuff sack made of silicon coated 1.1 oz nylon plus 10 tent stakes
  • Patagonia running shorts
  • Patagonia short sleeve polyester shirt
  • Patagonia wide brimmed sun hat
  • Inov8 ‘fly rock’ trail running shoes
  • 3 pairs of thin nylon men’s dress socks
  • Wool/synthetic blend watch cap
  • Homemade synthetic mittens
  • Water proof breathable mitten shells
  • Patagonia ‘r1’ long sleeve shirt
  • Patagonia waterproof breathable anorak
  • Light weight non water proof nylon rain pants
  • 1-litre water bottle (soda pop bottle)
  • 2 ½ gallon water bag (very light weight)
  • Small lidded plastic eating/drinking container (kool aid container)
  • Titanium metal spoon (I’ve broken too many plastic ones in cold weather!)
  • Small nylon stuff sack (‘ditty bag”)
  • Small Swiss army ‘classic’ pocket knife with ‘p58’ can opener
  • Very small compass
  • Pencil and sheets of ‘write in the rain’ paper
  • Tooth brush
  • Dental floss
  • Credit card sized nylon wallet
  • 2 led coin sized pinch lights (one red, and one green beam)
  • Small repair kit with needles, thread, safety pin, and duct tape all contained in small plastic vial
  • Mini bic lighter
  • Emergency fire starting kit with matches, magnesium rod, and petrol soaked cotton balls
  • Canon zr 500 digital video camcorder used for video journaling (for ‘Tell it on the mountain film project)

Additional gear used on the hike for short periods

  • ULA ‘helix potty towel’ I used it as an ice axe against the manufactures advice
  • Six moon designs ‘gate wood cape’ combination poncho/tent used in southern 700 miles
  • Bug netting tent and head net used in the north west on the northbound leg
  • Thick wool blend socks (used in the high sierra both directions)
  • Henry Shires tarp/tent Used in high sierra in late fall
  • Umbrella- carried for much of the summer and used for sun as much as rain and snow
  • Additional clothing Patagonia long underware, neck gaiter, ‘micro puff’ jacket and ‘spray master rain pants-all used in high sierra on way back south
  • Optimus ‘crux’ cartridge stove-only carried in sierra on way back south
